How To Speed Up Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

How To Speed Up Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth were originally used by our caveman ancestors to grind plant tissue but serve no actual purpose anymore. At best, they erupt without too much bother and that’s about it. However, for a lot of people wisdom teeth can cause numerous issues such as infection, decay, cysts and severe pain. In these instances, removal of some or all of your wisdom teeth can be indicated to prevent further issues.

Common issues you may experience following wisdom tooth removal including bruising, swelling, bleeding and discomfort. Having said that, some people find they have very few issues after removal of their wisdom teeth. Whatever the case, you need to be vigilant about aftercare.

When it comes to wisdom teeth removal, there are a few easy steps you can take to speed up the recovery process.

Immediate aftercare

Immediately following your procedure, gauze will be placed over your extraction site and you need to remember to bite down gently to stop any bleeding. Some bleeding is normal so don’t be alarmed if your gauze gets a bit messy – the most important thing is that you continue to apply gentle pressure to the area.

Be careful with food and drink

For at least the first 12 hours after the removal of your teeth, be careful with any food or drinks as you don’t want to dislodge the blood clot in the surgical site. Avoid hot beverages and stick with soft foods. Also, don’t be tempted to vigorously rinse your mouth out as this could easily dislodge the blood clot.

Ice for swelling

Some people experience very little swelling but if you’re finding that your face is sore and swollen, apply ice packs for some relief. Make sure you apply ice relatively quickly after your procedure as it will have limited effect if you do it a couple of days down the track.

Rinse with salt water

The day after your procedure, provided the bleeding has completely stopped, you can try very gently rinsing your mouth out with lukewarm salty water. If you do this several times a day, this can speed up the healing process and reduce pain.

Call your dentist if necessary

If you’re worried about anything following your procedure, such as excessive bleeding or pain, or have any questions about the recovery process then you need to give your dentist a call. They’ll want to know if there are any problems so they can help you recover as quickly as possible.
